This included a period from 1984 to 1989 working for smaller independent oil and gas companies in London including Superior Oil, Carless and then Kelt (now known as Perenco) which provided a firm grounding in upstream oil and gas activities through the variety of exploration, appraisal and development operations with which Mike was involved in the UKCS, both on and offshore, and later on in West Africa and Europe.

From 1989 to 1999, Mike worked for Petresearch as a geologist specialising in international third party project marketing activities. Mike developed his own unique style and became principally responsible for the group's project marketing activities as Technical Manager being rewarded by a number of significant successes, particularly with some of the more difficult exploration projects. Mike was General Manager from 1997 until leaving to establish Envoi at the end of 1999.
